Japan

During a cruise to Japan with Celebrity, you'll visit extraordinary cities with an ancient culture that seamlessly blends with the country’s ultra-modern architecture and lifestyle. Japan cruises offer you the chance to discover captivating Shinto shrines, stroll through meticulously-planned formal gardens, savour the freshest sushi, and visit some of the world's most beautiful mountain scenery.

Visit Tokyo, where you can explore the city's intricate temples, shop in its bustling markets, and enjoy its diverse and delicious food. You'll also visit Kyoto, where Buddhist temples and the gracefully curved nagare-zukuri style of architecture contribute to the city’s celebrated beauty. Admire Mount Fuji, the highest mountain in the country, its snow-capped cone a symbol of Japan. Uncover the rich history, serene nature, and modern buzz of Japan on a luxury cruise to Asia with Celebrity Cruises.

Japan Cruise Destinations

Authentic Cultural Experiences:  Japan has one of the deepest, best-preserved cultures anywhere on earth, and you'll get to experience this first-hand on cruises to Japan. In Tokyo, with its skyscrapers and Shinto shrines side-by-side, you'll feel the intricate balance of old and new Japanese culture. In Kyoto, explore more than 1,600 temples and shrines, including the iconic Kinkaku-Ji, or "Golden Pavilion." Enjoy traditional Japanese music, folkloric dance, and art, all on one incredible journey that brings you cultural enrichment at every turn.

Unique Cuisine:  Dining in Japan is a treat, offering extraordinary diversity, creativity, and adventurous ingredients. You can find fresh, delicious sushi and sashimi, but look out, too, for fantastic yakitori (skewered chicken), tempura (vegetables or seafood fried in a light batter), udon (thick wheat noodles), and much more.

Natural Wonders:  Japan is a land of natural beauty and wonder, and you'll have the opportunity to see some of the country's most beautiful natural sights during your cruise. Visit majestic mountains, sacred hot springs, and charming botanical gardens. Enjoy cherry blossoms in spring, or see the stunning red leaves of fall. No matter when you choose to cruise, Japan's natural beauty will be on display for you to cherish.

Featured Japanese Cruise Ports
A Japan cruise will take you to a diverse mix of ports. Some of these ports, like the famous capital city of Tokyo, offer a city experience full of skyscrapers, fine dining, and a chance to witness the day-to-day life of many who live in Japan. Other ports you’ll visit during a cruise around Japan provide a more tranquil setting with opportunities to get out into nature and visit ancient temples and shrines. In addition, many of our Japan cruise itineraries offer overnight ports of call to experience the nightlife of Japan; these may take place in Kagoshima, Kobe, Kyoto, and Tokyo.

Tokyo

Tokyo is a revelation for travelers heading on an Asia cruise from Japan. Before boarding in nearby Yokohama, take a day or two to enjoy this dynamic international hub. Don’t miss skyline views from the top of the famous Tokyo Tower, modeled after the Eiffel Tower and painted orange among a sea of silver skyscrapers. Tour the oldest Buddhist temple in Tokyo, Sensō-ji, which contains a sprawling market of souvenirs. The whole family will love Tokyo Disneyland, the first Disney property built outside of the United States.

From Tokyo, you can sail to dreamlike destinations such as Ishigaki Island, Kyoto, Kobe, Mt. Fuji, Busan, Hong Kong, Taipei, and even a transpacific cruise to Vancouver via Russia. These cruises from Tokyo offer the perfect blend of Japanese and East Asian cultural experiences with world-class amenities and exhilarating activities for all types of tastes at each port.

Kyoto

On a Kyoto cruise, discover the fascinating cultural capital of Japan, where countless temples, traditional geishas, Zen gardens, and majestic castles await.

Explore Kyoto’s ancient architecture, including the stunning Golden Pavilion and the mystical red torii gates of the Fushimi Inari shrine. Savor the city’s culinary scene, from hole-in-the-wall ramen joints to Michelin-starred restaurants. If you cruise to Japan in the spring, you’ll have the chance to experience the magic of the cherry blossom season, a time of extraordinary beauty in Kyoto.

Mt. Fuji

Mount Fuji is one of Japan’s most enduring and famous sights. Not only is it Japan’s highest mountain, but it’s also an active volcano and considered sacred to the area’s residents. The surrounding areas like Tokyo and Yokohama will give you a faraway glimpse of Mount Fuji, but you shouldn’t miss the opportunity to get up close and personal with the mountain while on a Mt. Fuji cruise.

Of course, there’s more to do than just mountain climbing. Travelers who stop here on an Asia cruise also enjoy the area’s adventurous skiing opportunities and dipping in the local hot springs. When you arrive in the port of Shimizu, you’ll find abundant shopping at the S-Pulse Dream Plaza along the waterfront. Try the local beer, influenced by German brewing practices, or enjoy the area’s incredibly fresh local tuna. Visitors can also enjoy a day at Hakone National Park for crisp nature and incredible views, or go into Shizuoka City for shopping, fine dining, and exploration. Considerably less crowded than Tokyo and teeming with natural beauty, the Mt. Fuji area and nearby Shizuoka City promise an exciting combination of city life and tranquil nature.

Aomori

Aomori City is the capital of the Aomori prefecture, and by far one of Japan’s most underrated cities. Chock full of picturesque historic temples, museums, and close to incredible nature like Mt. Hakkoda, Aomori offers an off-the-beaten path take on Japan. Even though Aomori City has a population of over a quarter of a million, it still has that small-town sleepiness you’d be hard pressed to find in Tokyo or Kyoto. In the spring and summer, Aomori bursts to life with cherry blossom festivals and the Nebuta Festival every August.

While you’re stopped here on an Asia cruise, don’t miss thought-provoking modern art exhibits at the Aomori Museum of Art, or a bird’s-eye view of the city from the observation deck of the ASPAM pyramid. Apple orchard tours and harborside strolls, local fish markets and dramatic ropeway rides to the top of Mt. Hakkoda are just a few of the offerings in Aomori for the adventurous outdoorist.

Hiroshima

When on an Asia cruise to Hiroshima, Japan, you’ll find top-notch historic and cultural institutions right at your fingertips. Hiroshima quickly rebuilt after an atomic bombing in 1945 during World War II, and history buffs will be fascinated by Hiroshima’s enduring resilience in the face of tragedy. Monuments like Peace Park and the Hiroshima Peace Memorial are a testament to the region’s history and remind us to never forget the loss of life that happened as a result of the bombing.

For meaningful walks through history, head to Shukkeien Garden. Take a tour of incredible miniature garden landscapes and see Hiroshima Castle, which dates all the way back to 1589. Or take a more outdoorsy approach to exploring with a half-day excursion to Miyajima Island. It’s less than an hour from Hiroshima. Hike Mount Misen and check out the beautiful Japanese temple Daishō-in at the summit.

Kochi

You’ll find there’s plenty to see and do in Kochi, the approachable, friendly capital city of Japan’s Kochi prefecture. Kochi is an outdoorist’s paradise, where Pacific beaches and mountain views are easily accessible for tourists and locals alike to explore. Quieter than Tokyo and more outdoorsy than Kobe, a Kochi cruise is the perfect way to see a more relaxed, traditional Japan. One of Kochi’s best-known sites is the historic Kochi Castle, which dates back to the 1600s, or you can venture to the Niyodo River for a tour along Japan’s clearest, most peaceful waters.

Living like a local is the best way to experience Kochi. No rushing or speeding between excursions is necessary here. Shopping at Sunday Market is a must-do activity for weekenders looking to experience fresh produce and local goods in Kochi, plus there’s an entire shopping district along Harimayabashi Street where travelers can purchase clothing, handcrafted goods, and Japanese artwork. Take a break to see penguins and other marine species at the aquarium on Katsurahama Beach, then stop in at a restaurant to try the region’s signature katsuo no tataki, broiled bonito fish served with onion and garlic. While you’re on an Asia cruise, the small-town vibe of Kochi will make you feel right at home.

Okinawa

Life is a little slower in the Okinawa prefecture, where the beaches are impossibly blue and the island offers something for everyone, from outdoor enthusiasts to foodies and everything in between. Scuba divers especially love the Okinawa area and Southwest Islands for its vibrant coral ecosystem and incredible limestone formations.

No Asia cruise would be complete without a stop in Okinawa, which has a long history of U.S. armed forces living on the island. Your Okinawa, Japan cruise ship will dock in Naha, the capital city of the Okinawa prefecture. In Naha, you’ll find a fascinating mix of Shinto shrines and landmarks dating back to the 14th century, like Shurijo Castle and the traditional Shikinaen Garden. Or, take an afternoon excursion to the former Japanese Navy Underground Headquarters, which is perfectly preserved as it was last left, before enjoying a reflective walk along the Okinawa Peace Park.

Sapporo

As the capital of Japan’s Hokkaido prefecture, Sapporo balances its urban sensibilities with incredible mountainscapes, relaxing hot springs, and natural spaces built into the city center, like Odori Park, which is beautifully sandwiched among the city’s skyscrapers. Though once a humble trading town, Sapporo’s development skyrocketed in the 19th century when urban planners decided to create a new kind of Japanese city modeled after Western metropolises. Still, you’ll find plenty of historic attractions on a Sapporo cruise, like the Noboribetsu Jidaimura, a museum dedicated to the Edo period.

Let your Japan cruise with Celebrity Cruises be a gateway to the best Sapporo has to offer, whether you’re exploring the open-air Village of Hokkaido, admiring masterpieces at the Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art, or sipping brews at the Sapporo Beer Museum.
